Q. I own a small shoe storefront. Now that most credit cards are chip cards, they are much harder to counterfeit, correct? Do I still need to worry about fraud? A. Yes, chip cards are much harder to counterfeit. However, you still need to be mindful of fraud. There are vulnerable areas where things could still go wrong. Here are a few simple tips to help you avoid unnecessary exposure: • Check the expiration date. It must be in the future; • Check the embossed number on the card. It must match the four digits of the account number displayed on the screen of the terminal; • Check the signature on the transaction receipt. It must match with the one on the back of the card. If the card is not signed, request a picture ID to verify the signature and the identity of the cardholder. Q. I run an online dating membership site. I’ve heard that due to the implementation of the chip technology, fraud is moving online. If this is true, how can I protect my business from increased fraud?
